Coffee in Medellín

The best coffee shops in El Poblado, on foot

Medellín takes Antioquia coffee seriously, and El Poblado is where you'll find the best cups. If you're hunting for the best coffee shops in El Poblado, nine places from our guide are within a 15-minute walk of Haven, plus one inside the hotel. This is the route we walk ourselves.

We've split it into three stops: Vía Primavera, right around the corner; the spots for working or meeting; and the Manila and Astorga cluster, which is worth a ten-minute walk.

In the hotel

Start without leaving: Swing Lounge

Swing Lounge, in Haven's lobby, serves specialty coffee from Antioquia from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. It's the first cup of the day for a lot of our guests, and an easy place to meet up before heading out.

The route

Our specialty coffee route through El Poblado

Vía Primavera: three coffee shops on one block

Three or four minutes away you'll find Pergamino Café, Café Velvet and Moara Café. Pergamino is the benchmark, roasting its own beans and buying direct from Antioquia farms. Velvet is for a slow breakfast. Moara is for people who care more about the cup than the brunch. You can hit all three in one morning.

For working or meeting

Clemente Café & Flowers, toward Parque Lleras, is quiet and laptop-friendly. Café Noir, in Provenza, is the most polished choice for a date or a meeting, with prices above average.

Manila and Astorga: round two

Nine to twelve minutes out, there's a cluster that makes the walk worthwhile. Hija Mía Coffee roasts small batches and runs barista workshops. Urbania Café is a certified B Corp. Al Alma Café · Astorga has a tiled patio and siphon coffee. Café Dragón goes from espresso by day to cocktails by night.

Next door is Ocho43 Tienda de Diseño, if you want to pair your coffee with some Colombian design shopping.

Tips

How to drink coffee in El Poblado

Order a pour-over if you want to taste the origin; on this route you'll find V60 and siphon. The espresso is good everywhere, but filter coffee is where differences between farms really show.

Many of these are morning spots. Al Alma and Hija Mía close mid-afternoon, and on weekends they fill up for brunch.

To take some home, buy whole single-origin beans at Pergamino. For a wider gift, Artesanías Colombia Mía in Provenza carries coffee and coffee sweets.

If you want to see coffee on the farm, there are half-day tours south or west of the Aburrá Valley. You'll find them in our full Medellín guide.
